Description
United We SAWs (Seek After Wisdom), a public service fraternity and sorority, had a powerful impact on Black students at the University of Iowa. S.A.W. took Iowa’s campus by storm in the 1970s and early 80s, making you want to holler for more! Bold, brilliant, shining lights that transformed Iowa’s Black campus into a kaleidoscope of bold black consciousness, energy, excitement, and awareness. Its 21 founding members and new members held their own, earned the respect of black Greek fraternities and sororities on campus, and served as an example of what black brotherhood and sisterhood should look like and a model for others to follow.
While spreading joy and happiness to those who came into their orbit, S.A. W. exemplified brotherhood and sisterhood, fulfilling their purpose to promote Black unity using the principles of Truth, knowledge, Heritage, and Spirit. Oh, what a time it was to share love, wisdom, and understanding while being young, creative, ambitious, and Black, and a fun-loving disposition, of course.
“I had nothing but love and respect for the brotherhood they exemplified. The respect they always gave others and their willingness to help fellow students”
—Kathy Smith-Dillon.
“The men of SAW were so close to each other and the epitome of brotherhood on Iowa’s campus. I remember and participated in a show of solidarity in the tragic events in Atlanta Child Murders in 1979. Your group put out a call for everyone to wear a black band on our arms to show that we, as black people, are thinking about them, and that they are in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers. Bless you guys, and by all of you. Happy 50th anniversary!”
Joey Thurman, President, University of Iowa, Black Alumni Association.
